My brother called me furfag a few times when I said I loved some characters in Robin Hood, and redwall

I looked up furries and was like "no way!!!" I started posting drawings on furafinity before seeing an add for tails refuge and then coming here

Since then my perv levels have definitely reached new heights and I actually have people I'd call me friend.... A few i really really like ;)

Sorry I'm a tad late. You TieDye, you practically brought this entirely to my realisation, if it weren't for you I wouldn't be at this stage at least. Thank you.

Always been kinda different. First realization was when I was very young in fact. Found the furry community and started blending right into the crowd.

I've liked Anthropomorphic animals since I was a kid.  Disney's Robin Hood, Redwall, Sly Cooper, Talespin. . . .

However, my first introduction to furries was, yes, mostly porn.  Yiff wasn't what introduced me to the idea, it just taught me the term, and somewhere along the line, I realized there was a whole group of people out there, who had been pawing to the same ideas I had been.  XD  But, no, seriously, while that was, and is, still a big thing for me, it's not the primary thing, by a long shot.  I just always loved the idea, of a world where furs existed, and thought it was awesome.

Mostly since child have a strong urge to have wings.

It is sort of plain, but the fantasy never go away, also urge to fly and freedom...  Not sure how to describe well!

Gaiaonline. There was a furry forum on there and people were posting their fursonas so I scrolled through that and thus a furry was born.

Used to doodle dragons and other mythological creatures all over my desk in high school. Had a heavy interest in myths, fairy tales, and folklore. Would visit this shop downtown on a daily basis that sold ceramic figurines. Kinda' stumbled onto the fandom while browsing random shit online and wanted to know more and meet folks who shared similar interests.

Nowadays I use sites similar to TR to keep in touch with friends, meet new people, and plan for events...

...and yeah, I'm a sucker for traditional / hand-crafted works as well.

I didn't know what it was. I guess it was a way to cope with constant bullying at my middle school, then high school. It was only then  until I found out what it was and that there were other people who had the same interest as I did.
A few of us became friends...
Then we graduated.
Most of the furfriends I hung out with after graduation lead self-destructive lives and refused to acknowledge they had problems. No jobs, no money, no will to do anything. The tipping point was when some of them started defending a domestic abuser. SO, dropped them like a bag of rotting potatoes and really haven't found any IRL friends who were furs.

I live a in a dry area lmao

They got me when I was young. Practically every bit of media I got growing up had anthro characters in them.

Had a fascination with furry characters when i was young, though strangly enough, my fursona came from when i was making my steam name. I just happened to put Eagle in there (because i liked eagles and because i thought i had eagle eyes and reflexes), and that became my fursona.

So complicated of a question for me

  1. has nothing to do with the porn side for me
  2. has more to do with finding a true representation of the self
  3. not fitting in + looking for acceptance + living in a toxic environment during childhood + need escapism
  4. wish fulfillment
  5. naturally drawn to doing this sort of artwork as a child
  6. was given a birthday invitation involving an old artwork by artist BabiJami who was friends with Barachan which lead to conversations with both of them online and suddenly on Yerf and Side7 and then Deviantart and I'm like "wow ok this is actually a thing".
  7. At some point joined yahoo group FurryWorld where I met several people *stares at Red* and for about a month or two was the head moderator and I did an animated gif for the title but I am not a leader type so I gave it away
  8. Weird spiritual stuff about personalities and connections with the earth maybe?
  9. Even more complicated stuff about feelings of dysphoria and never feeling quite right
  10. Tail envy??? Is that a thing?

im not really sure of hte factors or whatever that could attribute/any factors that lead to it but once i kind of learned what beinng furry was or whatever it just felt right and made senese somehow and seemed to anwser alot of questions i  guess? the only example ican think of is fursona wise: furry crash is a mirror image of human crash

@Ryokenohki  tail envy is totaly fuckin real

It was definitely Redwall fandom for me as a kid, and discovering Yerf from there. I fell off it for a little while but now it really appeals to me to have something like the furry fandom- I just can't get as invested as a lot of my fandom friends in fanfic/art and seeing artists put their own take on existing characters, I like seeing folks talk about their own characters more! Even if those characters are just a representation of themselves.

And, yes, the look of a lot of furries appeals to me :p (though I'm picky and it's rare to find yiff that is actually to my liking)

For me it was some time back in my freshman year of high school, so around 2007. My friend at the time was drawing these neat little fox characters, so I thought I would learn too! And then she introduced me to a roleplaying platform called Furcadia, and from there ws my furry evolution, though I didn't fully call myself a fur until 2009/2010. I made my fursona and did a mashup of languages to get her name and went with that, and she was the edgiest thing for the longest time lmao. In 2015/2016 i sorta reinvented myself and my fursona

I met my now-fiance on Furcadia back around 2007 as well!

But from Furc i moved to SL and have been active on and off there since 2010

I think I realized I enjoyed the furry community early on in life. Loony tunes, Robin Hood, those books about mice particpating in medieval warfare and such.

But what I found fascinating about furries were they were my first conscious dive into the concept of character itself. Humans are boring, Ill say that now, we have boring eyes, boring noses, boring ears and just... judt boring everthing, I think.

Animals have a way of... projecting, establishing character without even uttering a word. I always looked at characters and how they were formed when I was younger and found that I easily identified key elements of a characters persona from just taking a good look at them. The king in Robin Hood, Syd from Ice Age, and Star wolf from Star fox, just to name a few, were examples of (what I feel) is good characterization.

Of course, I suppose Ive always been very anti-human when it came to fiction. As I said before, we are boring creatures.

Also, Bugs bunny was totes bangable in drag.

Freshman yeah in high school: i was drawing a fox once. And I was looking for foxes and fox sketches to draw when I found some doots of anthro foxes. I spent the entire three days exploring the interweebs.

And then I started drawing anthro foxes on my paper bag book cover in religion class at Catholic high school lmfao

I actually found out through music. I was talking with a friend on Deviantart about music, and he linked me to a few videos. One of them was some music by Fox Amoore. I was interested in the music, and I noticed something in the description and the comments mentioning "furries". I looked into it, one thing led to another, and I ended up here, on this site. I found it through an ad on FA.
